Australia's Spierig brothers, the team of twins behind UNDEAD, tell Sci Fi Wire that the 305 computer effects in the film were practically home-made on their Pentium II 600 computer. Besides maurading zombies (achieved with makeup), the film features an isolated city "quarantined" by a wall that mysteriously appears around its entire perimeter and hundreds of comatose bodies levitating in the air as one character attemps to escape by airplane.
"You can buy domestic software to make Hollywood effects, but you hve to take the time to do it," said Michael Spierig. "It takes a long time to learn the 3-D effects. We'd go to a turotial, read up on how it's done, and then go do it. You have to comit the time to understand what it can do."
Lions Gate opens UNDEAD on July 1.
