A round-up of 131 reviews (109 for, 22 against) yielded an enormously positive 83% fresh rating at Rotten Tomaoes for STAR WARS EPSIDOE THREE, REVENGE OF THE SITH.
Among those critics designated the "Cream of the Crop" (i.e., those writing for major outlets), the rating was a slightly lower but still quite impressive 74%, with Newsweek's David Ansen, Hollywood Reporter's Kirk Honeycutt, and the Chicago Sun-Times' Roger Ebert all giving thumbs-up reviews.
"It's good. I mean really good," wrote Ty Burr in the Boston Globe. And Michael Booth in the Denver Post opined: "Just when you thought it was safe to ridicule everything STAR WARS, Lucas returns from his flirtation with the Dark Side by crafting a terrific capper to his monumental series."
Nevertheless, the best line came from one of the negative reviews. Duane Dudek wrote in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: "The finale feels less the inevitable conclusion of some great saga than the predictable mooing of a reliable cash cow."
Ouch! Take that, Lucas!
